Groundbreaking Ceremony for Renaissance Square in Essex, Maryland
New construction of 115 for-sale homes and 81 senior apartments in Baltimore County

Columbia , Md. – March 26, 2009 – Enterprise Homes, Mark Building Company and local residents and clergy were joined today by Maryland Lt. Governor Anthony G. Brown, Baltimore County Executive James T. Smith, Jr. and Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development Secretary Raymond A. Skinner to officially break ground for the new Renaissance Square community in the Essex-Middle River neighborhood in Baltimore County. Located at the site of the former Kingsley Park Apartments, Renaissance Square will feature green, sustainable living, including 115 for-sale homes and the Evergreen senior apartment building on the 17-acre site. The three-phase development is slated for completion in 2012.

"After years of substandard and crime-ridden housing that plagued Kingsley Park, Renaissance Square will be home to beautiful new housing for seniors, for young families, and it will provide opportunities for home ownership," said Baltimore County Executive Jim Smith. "This groundbreaking is an outstanding achievement for the people of Essex. I also thank Enterprise Homes and Mark Building Company for their commitment to working together with this community to make Renaissance Square something that will be truly special."

Renaissance Square is one of four developments currently under construction or rehabilitation by Enterprise Homes. The project is valued at $43 million in total development costs, which includes financing from Susquehanna Bank, the state of Maryland, Baltimore County, Enterprise Green Communities® and a tax credit equity investment through Enterprise Community Investment, Inc.

"Governor O'Malley and I set out to strengthen and grow our middle class and expand opportunities to more Marylanders. We value our partnership with County Executive Smith that has helped us take another step toward those goals," Lt. Governor Brown said. "Projects like Renaissance Square help to provide working families with affordable housing and the opportunity to purchase homes. Through these partnerships, which connect local government and state government with public and private partners, we have built the strong communities that we cherish."

Through funding from an Enterprise Green Communities grant, the homes at Renaissance Square and the Evergreen senior apartment building will include a variety of green design features such as green label carpet, energy-efficient HVAC systems, Energy Star appliances and heat- and drought-tolerant landscaping. The Renaissance Square community will consist of townhouses and two styles of detached, single-family homes for sale that blend traditional architecture with design that encourages community interaction and outdoor use.

"Thanks to a successful public-private partnership, Enterprise Homes is proud to bring new homes and a healthy living environment to the Essex and Middle River communities," said Chickie Grayson, president and CEO of Enterprise Homes, Inc. "The new Evergreen senior building will allow long-time residents to remain near family and friends while enjoying a host of amenities, including a community center, exercise studio, computer center and hospitality suite."

"The Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development is proud to support Renaissance Square and continue our successful partnership with Enterprise," said DHCD Secretary Raymond A. Skinner. "With its use of green development principles and its combination of both homeownership and affordable rental housing opportunities, Renaissance Square is great example of the type of strong, sustainable communities that enrich the quality of lives of Marylanders and ensure that our State is Smart, Green and Growing."
