Enterprise Homes Celebrates Grand Opening of
The Greens at Rolling Road in Baltimore County
Celebration of opening of 83 green apartments for seniors in Catonsville
Baltimore – September 25, 2009 - Enterprise Homes, Inc. and local residents were joined today by Baltimore County Executive James T. Smith, Jr., Baltimore County Councilman S. G. Samuel Moxley and Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development Director of Multifamily Housing Programs Patricia R. Sylvester to celebrate the grand opening of The Greens at Rolling Road in the Catonsville neighborhood of Baltimore County. The Greens at Rolling Road, a community of 83 affordable and environmentally sustainable rental homes for seniors, was completed in June 2009.
“The Greens at Rolling Road is an outstanding place to live. And the seniors of Baltimore County agree with me. Since opening for occupancy this past June, 78 of the 83 units are occupied. That represents a 94 percent occupancy rate. Providing that number of homes to seniors in the heart of Catonsville is a wonderful addition to what is already a vibrant community," said Baltimore County Executive Jim Smith.
The Greens at Rolling Road was recently recognized by the Home Builder’s Association of Maryland’s Land Development Council for Excellence in Community Development. The three-story building consists of 65 one-bedroom and 18 two-bedroom units. Designed with steep sloping roofs and stone cladding, the building complements the early 20th century historic residences located in the community. The varying roof lines are in keeping with the residential feel of the surrounding neighborhoods.
“Enterprise is committed to ensuring that green sustainable housing is the standard in all affordable, seniors, mixed-income and workforce housing developments that we touch,” said Charles R. Werhane, president and CEO of Enterprise Community Investment, Inc. “Our award-winning Enterprise Green Communities initiative is the first national standard in green affordable housing, and we’re proud to partner with Baltimore County, the state of Maryland, SunTrust Bank and the Catonsville community on The Greens at Rolling Road.”
The apartment building includes several features to increase energy efficiency and the conservation of raw materials. Energy-efficient, double-pane, low-E windows; water-conserving plumbing fixtures; Energy Star appliances; energy-saving light fixtures and green label carpeting throughout contribute to a healthy, sustainable living environment.
As America’s population ages, the need for affordable seniors housing is greater than ever. Enterprise is responding with a range of senior housing options that allow seniors to age in place with community and supportive services to meet their needs.
Outdoor amenities at The Greens at Rolling Road include a quarter-mile walking path, planter beds, a bocce ball court, an entrance porch and a paved patio off the community room. Interior common areas such as a community room, TV lounge, activity room, laundry room, mail room and fitness center are clustered together on one wing of the first floor to encourage socialization among residents. The site provides easy access to neighborhood amenities and public transportation. Two large shopping centers that include retail and grocery stores sit within a two-mile radius, and an abundance of health care providers, restaurants and a thriving senior center are close by.
The Enterprise Green Communities initiative is the first national green building program focused entirely on affordable housing. It provides financing, funding and expertise to enable developers to build and rehabilitate homes that are smartly located, healthier, water conserving, more energy efficient and better for the environment – without compromising affordability. Since 2004, Enterprise has invested $700 million to create more than 15,800 green affordable homes in 350 developments in 30 states.
