Enterprise Holds James W. Rouse Community Service Day in Cleveland as Part of White House United We Serve Initiative

WHAT: James W. Rouse Community Service Day to be held as part of President Obama’s United We Serve initiative – Enterprise staff members in Ohio are providing much-needed volunteer assistance at Edgewood Park in the Slavic Village neighborhood of Cleveland. Enterprise volunteers will unpack and distribute “welcome kits” for more than 60 future residents – all of whom have disabilities and a history of long-term homelessness. The residents will be moving into Edgewood Park later this month. The welcome kits contain life essentials like cookware, a shower curtain and basic bedding supplies, so that the residents can start rebuilding their lives with solid foundations. Enterprise staff will be setting up each studio apartment so that incoming residents will be able to immediately focus on making the challenging transition from street life.

Edgewood Park was developed as part of the Enterprise-led Housing First Initiative. The Cleveland group plans to develop 1,000 supportive homes for single adults with a history of long-term homelessness and disabilities.

WHEN: Thursday, September 10, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

WHERE: Edgewood Park, 3215 East 55th Street, Cleveland, Ohio 44127

DETAILS: The first James W. Rouse Community Service Day was held in 2000 to honor cofounder and urban planner James W. Rouse. For nearly ten years, Enterprise has carried out community service activities in the greater Baltimore area near its headquarters in Columbia, Md. Throughout the years, the effort has been expanded to include other cities. This year, the annual James W. Rouse Community Service Day will include events led by Enterprise staff from 15 of its local offices. In addition, the activities will be a part of the United We Serve initiative, President Obama’s national call to service.

During the week leading up to the 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance (September 11), more than 330 Enterprise staff and other volunteers from across the country will participate in volunteer activities in their respective cities.

PHOTO/INTERVIEW OPPORTUNITIES: Enterprise volunteers will be available for photo opportunities and Enterprise executives will be available for interviews.
