Two Teams, Two-and-a-Half Days,
One Extraordinary Opportunity to Improve Affordable Housing

The Affordable Housing Design Leadership Institute brings together leaders on the frontline of affordable housing design and development for a two-and-a-half day session focused on innovation and best practices in community design.

The Institute explores the role of design through the lens of seven development projects and intensive dialogue between community developers and architects. The goal of the gathering is to improve upon the design practices in the affordable housing arena and raise development leaders' capacity to produce more livable and sustainable housing for low- and moderate-income people living in the United States.

Modeled after, and with support of the Mayors’ Institute on City Design, seven design innovators will collaborate with seven forward-thinking nonprofit developers to solve "real-time" design challenges facing affordable housing projects at a critical point in the schematic design phase. The Design Resource and Development teams will discuss their successes and challenges in building healthy, viable homes and neighborhoods during two day-long sessions.

The developers, selected through an open application process, must have projects that pose substantial design challenges that lend themselves to constructive and creative advice and be leaders that exhibit a strong commitment to design excellence, green building and engagement of community residents. Each developer presents a project in the schematic design phase for feedback, yet ultimately this forum goes beyond a strict focus on these projects.

The Institute encourages each participant to think creatively, share challenges and ultimately, facilitates a cross-pollination of ideas and knowledge between designers and developers.
