07/27/11 - Enterprise Green Communities Best Practices Series: Access to Fresh, Local Foods
Access to healthy food is a critical component of community development, public health and education. In fact, research shows that increasing access to locally grown foods can result in greater consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables and lower diet-related diseases like heart disease and diabetes in children and adults. Proximity to fresh food is an important consideration when selecting an affordable housing project location and planning for on-site amenities. Community gardens and urban farms can also create opportunities for environmental and health education, spur economic development and reclaim vacant and abandoned property. This Live Online Event will explore how to bring fresh, local food into low-income communities with experts in urban agriculture and affordable housing.

Health Impact Assessments are a practical tool that can provide a structured process to determine a policy or project’s impact on health, and ensure that policy and project dollars are used efficiently to provide the greatest benefits to residents. This session features a discussion of Health Impact Assessments, and a presentation by a city official who used the assessments for their transportation plan. It also includes a detailed overview of the Healthy Development Measurement Tool , a comprehensive evaluation metric to consider health needs in urban development plans and projects.

04/20/2011 - Introducing New Resident Engagement Tools for Affordable Housing Developers and Owners
Resident education is crucial to maximize the health, economic, and environmental benefits of green development throughout a project’s life cycle. Enterprise is pleased to announce the rollout of Resident Education Cards and a Resident “Training in a Box.” During this training, our presenters will introduce these tools and describe best practices for implementation. This package of tools is a comprehensive set of educational cards and training modules to empower residents in maintaining their green building. The Resident Education Cards can be customized by property managers and resident coordinators to provide green tips and information specific to the development. The Resident ‘Training in a Box’ contains educational modules for trainers to incorporate that covers a variety of green and healthy living practices. Additionally, Enterprise continues to offer a Sustainability Training Grant to support project teams in developing and delivering customized educational materials and trainings for residents.

04/06/2011 - Innovative Models for Charrettes and New Tools that Support Integrative Design
In the first of an Enterprise Green Communities series on best practices in green affordable housing, industry experts discuss a unique approach to a recent integrative design charrette facilitated by Green Building Services that resulted in an ambitious plan for Central City Concern's portfolio in Portland, Oregon. This session provides an overview of best practices for visioning, goal setting and green strategy sessions, using Central City Concern’s charrette as a case study. The instructors share insights and highlight successes from the charrette that are broadly applicable to any green development planning session focused on providing healthier and more resource efficient housing for low-income individuals and families.

This webinar provides participants with a brief orientation to a new Enterprise tool, the Green Multifamily Rehabilitation Specifications. These model Specifications were created for multifamily projects of more than three stories undergoing moderate rehabilitation, and they are aligned with the 2011 Enterprise Green Communities Criteria. The session covers the basic content and structure of the Specifications, as well as helpful hints to consider when customizing the Specifications for your climate, housing stock, and targeted Enterprise Green Communities Criteria. 03/14/11 - Behavior Change Toward Green Living and Emissions Reduction
Our personal behavior can make a difference in cutting harmful green house gas emissions. We can make changes that cost very little to nothing but have a big impact on the environment and our health. For example, if American adopted a series of simple, inexpensive emissions-reducing measures in the areas of transportation, household energy consumption, diet and waste over the next ten years, the US could avoid 1 billion tons of emissions and saved money. During this session presenters share their experience engaging residents and property managers in green living and operations and maintenance.

EPA is expanding ENERGY STAR Qualified Homes to mid- and high-rise multifamily buildings. This session outlines program protocols and support provided by EPA, including an overview of modeling and testing and verification procedures specific to the multifamily building sector. Understanding the MFHR program requirements will be important for affordable housing developers using the 2011 Enterprise Green Communities Criteria, as the Criteria's whole-building energy performance pathway for mid- and high-rise buildings will be tied to meeting the requirements of the MFHR program.

This session provides an overview of the 2011 updates to the Enterprise Green Communities Criteria, a set of green building criteria developed for all affordable housing developments across the country. This training provides an introduction to the Green Communities Criteria, including examples of green building methods and materials referenced in the Criteria. The session will also provide a brief overview of the online Enterprise Green Communities Certification process.

01/20/2011 - How States Use Qualified Allocation Plans as Incentive for Preservation, Transit Oriented Development and Green Design & Building Practices
With the low income housing tax credit market (LIHTC) coming back to life, how states prioritize this valuable resource will, once again, increase in importance. Enterprise and the National Housing Trust have inventoried each state's Qualified Allocation Plan and how those plans provide incentive for preservation, transit oriented development, and green design and building practices. This webinar will outline those findings as well as address how states have actually allocated their tax credits over the last several years.

This session focuses on strategies for improving ventilation in multifamily buildings. Two leading experts, Terry Brennan of Camroden Associates and Marc Zuluaga of Steven Winter Associates, describe key steps in diagnosing existing ventilation systems to determine if the systems are providing healthy living environments and, if not, what approaches can help improve and fix the systems.

03/26/2010 - Introduction to Enterprise's Green Asset Management Toolkit for Multifamily Housing
Enterprise's "Green Asset Management Toolkit for Multifamily Housing" is designed for owners, asset managers and property management staff. The Toolkit includes holistic approaches to managing and improving the performance of an existing building, including those that were not constructed to be green. This session covers the structure and key elements of the Green Asset Management Toolkit. Attendees also hear from a Boston-based affordable housing developer that has incorporated comprehensive green practices into its asset management approach.

This session includes discussion of the Enterprise Green Communities’ certification process as well as a demonstration of the current requirements for the two-step online certification submittal and review. Future plans for the refinement of the certification process moving forward arel also presented.

From the onset of Green Communities, Enterprise set out to measure the effectiveness of the Criteria in delivering health, economic and environmental benefits. The results of this analysis are documented in a new report, Incremental Cost, Measurable Savings: Enterprise Green Communities Criteria, a first-of-its-kind study showing the cost effectiveness of meeting Enterprise Green Communities Criteria.This session reviews report findings and lessons learned from properties designed and built to the Enterprise Green Communities Criteria.

12/17/2009 - Green Communities: Radon-Resistant Construction Strategies
Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the country, so it is a critical consideration during design and construction to ensure we are providing a healthy living environment for residents of affordable housing. Fortunately, a home foundation designed and built with radon-resistant features will go a long way to ensuring low radon levels in the building. Enterprise Green Communities and the National Center for Healthy Housing (NCHH) have partnered to offer this educational session on radon resistant construction strategies with a particular focus on multi family structures. This session reviews the importance of radon mitigation and focuses on strategies for radon resistant construction in affordable housing through case study examples.

02/25/2009 - Green Communities: Engaging an Energy Consultant
The term “energy consultant” can mean different things to different people. By understanding the range of services that energy consultants can potentially offer, developers can better select an energy consultant to match the needs of high-performance building projects. This session focuses on the role of energy consultants in the design of high-performance buildings, explains the role of building modeling in a whole-building energy analysis and makes the distinction between meeting a pre-determined set of energy options versus adopting a design process that is specific to the building type in a particular climate.

The Pushing the Envelope training is based on the philosophy that a high performance building envelope is a top priority for addressing long term operations, maintenance and replacement costs in affordable housing.
