Sustainability Training Grants
Grants of up to $5,000 support training for residents and building operations staff to help them understand how best to maintain the green benefits of the housing. Funds can be used to cover implementing the training and creating tools that support green resident engagement and operations. Our Resident Engagement Tools can serve as a template for your training. This training:- Helps developers maximize the health, economic and environmental benefits of green development throughout the project’s life cycle.
- Provides an opportunity to transfer the design knowledge that informed the green planning and construction process to the residents, as well as operations and management staff.

The Mt. Sinai School of Medicine created slide presentations for one-on-one resident trainings for the families of the Eltona project in the South Bronx. The development of these materials was financed using an Enterprise grant. The guide consists of two parts; the instructor manual is used to engage the tenants, and the resident manual (left) is given to tenants to keep as a reminder of key healthy and green facts learned. |
Eligible Applicants
- Open to 501(c)(3) nonprofits, tribally designated housing entities; and for-profit entities participating through joint ventures with qualified organizations.
- Please note that applications for joint ventures must identify the nonprofit 501(c) (3) organization as the legal entity to receive the grant, if awarded funding.
- The applicant and the development team must demonstrate their qualifications to successfully carry out the proposed development.
Target Projects
- Projects must have completed construction at the time of application.
- Projects must be occupied prior to the grant award.
Intended Uses of Funds
- Cost of conducting a Sustainability Training session
- Design and printing of O&M manual
- Curriculum development
- Consultant fee for training, including travel costs, not to exceed $1,000
- Training preparation costs, such as creating invitations, meeting and follow-up materials
Grant Application and Approval Process
- Select a team member or consultant responsible for the development of the training curriculum. When contracting with a consultant, Enterprise will provide grantee with a sample consultant contract template, if necessary.
- Submit the grant application by the first week of the month.
- Receive word by the last week of that month that the grant has been approved, declined or approved with conditions. (Because funds are limited, Enterprise reserves the right to negotiate with grant applicants to determine the best use of these funds in a specific project.)
- Execute a Grant Agreement with Enterprise.
Reporting Requirements
Upon requesting disbursement of grant funds, grantees must provide Enterprise with a written narrative report including:
- Training agenda
- Attendee list
- Learning objectives
- Completed training manuals, including the operations and maintenance manual used
