Day of Service 2011 in Maryland: Great Kids Farm

Each year, Enterprise staff members volunteer in a range of projects as part of James W. Rouse Day of Service—it's one of the ways we give back to the communities and people we serve. In 2011, for the third year in a row, Enterprise staff in Maryland performed sitework and clean up at Great Kids Farm, an educational program of the Baltimore City Public Schools.

A Thank You Note from the Great Kids Farm

To our partners at Enterprise,

During the past three years Enterprise has been an invaluable partner in the impressive transformation that has begun to establish Great Kids Farm as a unique resource for City School students. Last Friday, you and your colleagues were true to form, putting your creativity into two dozen projects that create layers of benefit for our students.

One example of your impact on students is the educational microgreen kits you assembled on Friday. Beginning this week, students in 500 classrooms at 48 City Schools will use these resources to grow, study, taste, and share fresh food. This is a unique opportunity for students to learn how fruits and vegetables (like the snacks they enjoy each week as participants in the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program) begin their life as a seed. By planting that seed and studying it as it grows into a food that we eat, students not only observe where food comes from, but participate in the process of bringing fresh food to life for themselves and their peers – all without leaving the classroom!

From our director, Michael Thomas, to our farm staff and students, we are deeply grateful to each of you for your guidance planning, planting, weeding, cleaning, building, fundraising, organizing, and harvesting. Please be sure to thank your leadership and colleagues at Enterprise who make this day of service and our partnership not only possible, but inspirational and invaluable.

Sincerely,

The students and staff of Great Kids Farm
