Enterprise Supports Mayor Jackson’s Sustainable Cleveland 2019

In 2009, Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson launched Sustainable Cleveland 2019, a ten-year initiative to develop the city’s green economy. In just two years the initiative has forged ahead and is shaping a greener economy for Cleveland.

Mayor Jackson declared 2011 as the Year of Energy Efficiency and encouraged investment in resources such as energy efficiency workshops, green funding programs for businesses and developers – including Enterprise’s Multifamily Retrofit Fund – and embracing advanced standards for green building. Additionally, Enterprise sponsored the 2011 Sustainable Cleveland Summit Sept. 22-23. The theme of this year’s summit was energy efficiency and local food. Sustainable Cleveland 2019’s strategic plan calls for each of the ten years be dedicated to a distinct component of sustainability. These annual “Celebration Points” begin with energy efficiency in 2011 and include local foods, renewable resources and advanced energy, clean water, sustainable mobility and vital neighborhoods in future years. Working groups were organized to focus on communications, community engagement, institutional partnerships, business development, health and social capital for each component. In 2009 and 2010, Enterprise VP and Ohio Market Leader Mark McDermott co-chaired the Energy Efficiency working group out of which was created the Northeast Ohio Regional Energy Alliance, which is becoming the lead catalyst for energy efficiency as a tool for both reducing energy usage and creating new jobs in the region.
